Take Action Now!

In response to overwhelming public outcry, the New York State DEC has announced four public hearings to take comment on the proposed changes for rules governing high volume hydraulic fracturing, or "hydro-fracking," natural gas drilling methods in shale formations in NY, like Marcellus. DEC public hearings will be at the following locations:

  1. Wednesday, Oct. 28, Sullivan County Community College, E Building, Seelig Theater, 112 College Rd., Loch Sheldrake, NY 12759
  2. Tuesday, Nov. 10, Stuyvesant High School, High School Auditorium, 345 Chambers Street, New York, NY 10282
  3. Thursday, Nov. 12, Chenango Valley High School, High School Auditorium, 221 Chenango Bridge Rd., Chenango Bridge, NY 13901
  4. Wednesday, Nov. 18, Corning East High School, Auditorium, 201 Cantigny St., Corning, NY 14830.

The DEC will be available prior to the start of each session to answer individual questions. Doors will open at 6 p.m. at each hearing, and the hearings will begin at 7 p.m. There will be a five-minute time limit, but you can submit written comments as well.

Take Action Now!

  1. Call Governor Paterson at 518-474-8390 and request the sDGEIS Hydro-fracking comment period be extended to the end of January 2010.
  2. Attend the public hearings.
  3. Submit written comments.   

Tips for Writing Letters & Speaking at the Public Hearings:

  1. Remember to include your name & where you are from.
  2. Say why protecting our air and water is important to you (if you can, include specific examples of accidents in other states).
  3. Tell the DEC you do not want drilling on sensitive watersheds, including but not limited to sole-source aquifers and unfiltered drinking water supplies.
  4. Tell the DEC you want the comment period extended to the end of January 2010.
